All Things Health

Don’t you realize that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit?

1 Corinthians 6: 19

New at Bread and Honey this year is a section on the website for All Things Health. Care of one’s body (the sacred temple) and care of the whole health of those we love is integral to living soulfully. Think of it as a spiritual discipline. A miracle of design, function, and resilience, the human body requires tender care and regular love for increased longevity and peak day-to-day performance! We are not like cars that when they accrue too much mileage and begin to show real wear and tear, we get to turn them in for a newer model. God gives us one body to accomplish our mission here on earth. However, unlike cars, our bodies are incredibly intuitive and they are actually quite good at letting us know how we are faring. We just have to listen! If we are to heed Paul’s words, the body is the dwelling place for our incomparable soul and thus should be treated as sacred and of God.

Over the coming year, I will offer up tips for how we can better care for our “whole” health: mind, body and spirit. Quality sleep, daily movement, low stress, regular stretching, meditation, lots of green on the plate, experiences of regular joy, a forgiveness practice, and genuine exchanges of love is a great start. Today I will share with you a handful of supplements that either help to heal or enhance the bodies overall health. I am not a doctor and have no credentials except for my own genuine curiosity and investment in my family’s health. Therefore, please run all health suggestions by your own doctor to make sure it’s kosher for your unique body!

All Things Health
Spirulina
Spirulina is a blue-green algae regarded as a “Superfood” for its potency of antioxidants and high nutritional content. Spirulina has been shown to increase metabolism, lower inflammation in the body, improve gut health and boost the immune system. It is a source for plant protein and is rich in vitamins (calcium, niacin, potassium, magnesium, B vitamins, iron).
MACA

Maca is a plant sourced in the high altitudes of the Andes Mountains in Peru. A spoonful or two of MACA in smoothies or taken in capsule form is great for hormonal balancing, energy, libido and mood.

Daily Probiotic

There is too much science to ignore the connection between a healthy gut and a healthy brain. Probiotics increase the good bacteria in your digestive system. Probiotics found in kefir, fermented foods and supplements improve overall digestive health, boost the immune system, and help with brain fog and depression.

Wild Blueberries

My husband enjoys my homemade granola topped with wild blueberries every morning! These small blueberries pack a punch of antioxidants that have been shown to be an effective weapon to fight dementia and Alzheimer’s!

Vitamin D Supplement

It is a good idea to have your vitamin D checked annually via a blood test. Low vitamin D has been linked to depression, autoimmune diseases, osteoporosis, low energy and anxiety. It is the easiest health fix!!

CBD Oil

CBD oil is taken from the hemp plant with no THC or mood-altering properties. I have a history of taking ADVIL for aches and pains from running and my doctor suggested CBD oil as a much safer alternative for my kidneys and liver. It is also a great resource for improved sleep and overall tranquility (great for anxiousness on plane flights and three-year old temper tantrums!). You can also buy the CBD salve to rub on sore muscles.

Fish Oil

There has been so much debate in our country around the safety of eating fish and the medical necessity of a diet rich in Omega 3’s. We enjoy wild salmon once a week at our house, and David and I also supplement our diet with fish oil. I confess I have tried many brands and would love your opinion on which one you feel is the best on the market. What I do know is that Omega 3’s are so important for heart health, brain function, decreased inflammation, and healthy skin and hair!

Magnesium

I am a huge fan of magnesium! It has been a life-saver over the years with my insomnia. As I am a prime candidate for osteoporosis (tall, slender and breast-fed six babes!), my doctor regularly recommends increasing my magnesium intake! Read the literature! Most of us are deficient in magnesium. Every cell in our body needs magnesium to function properly. Science has shown magnesium has benefits for athletic performance and recovery, fights depression, lowers inflammation, decreases occurrence of migraines, and helps with PMS symptoms. I both supplement and make a Calm Tea most nights!

Garden of Life Perfect Green Superfood

I have my friend Joe to thank for introducing me to the Green powder! Who knew you could get so much green in a scoop? This is a great way to hide green in the kids smoothies!

Tumeric

I know turmeric is all the rage! I have cooked with it for ages, but now I have upped my game and regularly order a turmeric liquid shot at my local juice bar or I take it as a supplement. It helps with reducing inflammation, chronic aches & pains and arthritis!

Love, Farrell

The Biggest Little Farm is the perfect Friday night family movie night. It is soulful through and through!

The overall take away: There is Divine plan at work where everything comes together for good! God is in the details and miracles abound!
